AI is Great for a lot of Things—Crisis Communications is Not One of Them

Artificial intelligence systems, trained on general data sets, don't have the ability to tap into human emotions, empathy and values.

AI is great for a lot of things - crisis communications is not one of them.

In just the past few years, artificial intelligence (AI) programs like ChatGPT have become an invaluable tool in many aspects of education and school management. But when it comes to crisis management and strategic communications, AI falls short in addressing the complex and profoundly human aspects of sensitive situations that can occur in school communities. As independent school leaders, it's crucial to understand why human insight and empathy remain irreplaceable in managing crises effectively.

The Human Factor: Beyond Algorithms

Crisis communication requires a deep understanding of human emotions, reactions, and the intricate web of relationships within a school community. AI, no matter how advanced, cannot fully grasp the subtleties of human behavior or anticipate the myriad  ways people may respond to a crisis. Each case is unique, and the human perspective is essential in crafting messages that resonate with empathy and authenticity.

Every School is Unique

Independent schools each have their own distinct culture, values, and community dynamics. AI systems, trained on general data sets, cannot account for the specific characteristics of your school's environment. The history, traditions and relationships that are hallmarks of your institution require a tailored approach that only trained, experienced human leaders can provide.

Don’t Rush It

AI is popular because it delivers results fast—but important messaging should never be rushed. “So often we are encouraging schools to slow down in a crisis when the instinct is to dash something off just to get it out there and be done,” said TJG senior consultant Kim Newsome. “AI makes snap decisions more likely, resulting in sending something you may later wish you had not.” When you hit ‘send,’ there’s no way to get that message back.

Navigating Complex Crises

Crises such as suicide, sexual harassment, assault, financial malfeasance, and strained parent-school relationships are inherently complicated and sensitive issues. These situations demand a level of discretion and ethical consideration that AI cannot replicate, including:

  • Emotional intelligence and empathy

  • Ability to read non-verbal cues and subtext

  • Flexibility to adapt strategies in real-time

  • Ethical decision-making based on school values

  • Personal connections with community members
